.h1 DATA ENTRY
.vt 2
Data Entry simply means that you are going to enter infor-
mation into a record in a data file. With YOUR VERY OWN
^040, you are able to have records which contain
the data which you have personalized with your own names
for people, places, and things.
.h2 Choosing a Record to Use for Data Entry
You may use any record within your file for any data which
you want to save. Records do not have to be in a counting
sequence (1,2,3,etc.), but may be chosen by you randomly,
if you want.
.sp
If you know which record you want to use, you can type that
record number when asked. If you do not know what record
to use (you've forgotten the last one), you only have to
type a question-mark (?), and the next available record
will be located for you.
.sp
You should know that if you have not yet created the file
of records, you will get a message telling you that the
file does not yet exist, and that you must select Function
#1 (to create 100 records) before you can enter data.
.sp
After deciding which record that you will use, you will see
messages on lines 23 and 24, telling you what is expected.
Those messages also contain information about the way that
the information should look, if something special is
expected.
.sp
You will be asked for the following:
.sp
A Record-number
Two dates
Your Choices of:
^001
^002
^003
^004
^005
A ^021
A ^028
.sp
Following is more information about each of the items which
you will be asked for.
.h2 Record Number
This is the same number which you chose (either by stating
it, or by typing a question-mark), only this time it doesn't
have a minus-sign in front of it, which it would have if you
had typed a question-mark.
.h3 Dates
You should know that 11 positions have been reserved for
each date. You may enter dates in any way that you desire,
or you may just enter ~t~ if you want today's date. If you
do enter a date, the preferred way is to make it look like:
.sp
13 Jun 1985
.sp
You can now see why it is important to have entered the
right date during start-up, since that date is used when you
ask for ~t~ (for today's date). If you didn't give the right
date when you did a start-up, and then used ~t~ (for today),
you will get a date of:
.sp
01 Jan 1980
.sp
which is probably not what you wanted.
.h2 Choosing from the Multiple-choices
You may type any number between 1 and 256 when selecting a
^056, an ^059, or a ^060. You may type any number between
1 and 32 when selecting from the ^003 or from
the ^004.
.h2 Entry of ^021
You will probably want to enter the ^021 to the nearest
whole number, but you are not required to do so.
.h2 Entry of ^028
The ^028 which you enter may have a decimal-point in it,
but it cannot contain any commas. Following are some
examples, and whether or not they are all right.
.sp
1234.56 good
1234 good
1234. good
1,234.56 bad
.sp
On the following pages is an example of how you might enter
a record of data.
